Here is a map of Taksim and entrance of Istiklal Street. Directions are given assuming that you are walking through Istiklal str. from Taksim square ( ) to Tünel (Tunnel). So, when I say "right" or "left", make sure that Taksim square is on your back! I wanted to share my favourites in Beyoğlu with travellers who're interested in natives point of view.

Stuffed Mussels:

Mussels filled with rice is a popular street food and generally consumed after few drinks when you feel hungry. Sold on a large tray divided into two according to size of mussels. Just stand in front to eat as much as you want and put shells inside tray. When you finish, seller counts shells and calculates bill. Is it healthy? I dont have any idea but its delicious:)

Roasted Chestnuts:
Great for cold winter days. Sold in paper bags according to weight. I don't buy pre-packed ones and ask for hot ones to get warm:)

Almond On Ice:
Sellers travel meyhanes so you'll be asked when you're enjoying rakı. It's served in a plastic plate and you've to pay cash for this. There's a special technic to peel skin easily but how can I show it here???

Sesame Ring (Simit):
I'm sure most of you heard about it as Turkish bagel. Although there're many simit houses on Istiklal str., its most well known street food in Turkey. If you've time, try with cheese and tea, a common way for breakfast.

A historical passage full of meyhanes. Entrance is not large and maybe hard to notice when walking down. It's on your right just before Galatasaray school. All restaurants are nearly identical and as always everybody have their favourite one. I've to admit that much more touristic in recent years and you dont need to worry about english menu or english spoken staff. Renovated by Yeni Rakı (most famous rakı brand) few years ago and deserves a visit even if you dont want to eat. My favourite is Seviç an old one and frequent visitors are journalists, novelists and artists.

Beyoglu Chocolate

Beyoglu is famous with a special chocolate since 50's. This nostalgic chocolate is produced by a family firm "Zambo" and told that it has a secret formula. They are sold with a silver pack or without packing.

You can find this chocolate at most of the kiosks on Istiklal str., but the most famous kiosk is opposite to Benetton, on your left.

Inci Pastanesi

İnci patisserie is a classic for around 50 years serving at the same place without any branches.

This historical patisserie is famous for it's profiterole. You will taste worlds most delicious profiterole here. Don' miss!

Place is always crowded and has few tables so you may taste profiterole standing.

Atlas Bazaar

Atlas Pasajı (passage) is the street fashion center where you'll find "original design" clothing, accessories, bags etc. for reasonable prices. Most famous shop is "Raven", don't miss. There are 44 shops inside and these shops are at the back side of the passage, so don't forget to visit upstairs.

If you're interested in history, visit art gallery inside the passage for architectural details. The history of the building dates back to 1870 which was build as a winter residence by a rich family and restorated in 1932 as a shopping mall.

Atlas passage is on your left, Nr.209. The signboard is really small but you'll notice movie posters at the entrance.

Refik & Yakup 2 Meyhane

These two are my favorite meyhanes in Beyoğlu. I put them together because Yakup is the cousin of Refik. Refik Aslan opened his Meyhane at Tünel Sofyalı Str. in 1954 and still run the place with his son. Refik offers Turkish dishes during lunchtime and serves as meyhane (meze house) at night. One of the oldest and popular meyhane in area and reservation is required for weekend.

Yakup 2 Meyhanesi: Yakup Aslan is serving in his place for 27 years. It is famous for special hot mezes. My favorite meze is Arnavut ciğeri (fried liver). Needless to say, drink Rakı at both of them. On the Istiklal str., closed to Tunnel square, find Asmalı Mescit str. (a narrow street) on your right. Go straight for Yakup 2 or turn left for Refik.

Cremeria Milano

An Italian in Istanbul serving delicious gelato! Just few steps away from Tunnel square on Istiklal str. located on your right. Too many options to choose from, enjoy take away or use stands inside this small shop. Although Turkish style ice-cream is available all along the way, Cremeria Milano is the best if you like Italian style ice cream.

Şampiyon kokoreç

Babylon Performance Hall

Babylon is the most famous live performance & concert hall in the area. You can enjoy world famous Turkish or foreign musicians here. Live music starts at 21:30 every day but closed on sundays and mondays. You can buy tickets online , (simply search "babylon" on this site) or at the entrance. Don't forget that tickets could be sold out days before for some performers.

Babylon is very closed to Refik Meyhanesi, just pass Refik and keep walking. It's in the first right street. You'll notice the crowd:)

Shortly "best pizza" in town for me, cooked in a wood fired oven. In general, it's a restaurant, cafe, bar, pub according the time of day. Not a big place, few tables inside and few outside. First opened near Babylon club and became popular among clubbers who was spending few hours before club. Now they have some more branches but they're not clones, menus and ambiance are all different at each. More official info & menu available on their website.

Ghetto

Another performance hall just like Babylon. They offer live music nearly everyday in season and its more popular than Babylon in last few years. They serve as a restaurant during dinner time and programme generally starts around 23.00pm. Ghetto is few meters away from famous Nevizade str. so you can enjoy a meyhane atmosphere followed by good music at Ghetto.

In summers when club is closed, Peymane Ocakbaşı is serving at roof terrace. They serve good food, especially kebabs are delicious but unfortunately there's no scenery here. If you plan to eat there, never go before sunset, its really hot even shades are available.

Rejans

Rejans is a historical Ottoman-period Russian restaurant famous for lemon vodka. This restaurant was originally founded by white Russians who relocated to Istanbul after the revolution. Rejans was also well known as one of Kemal Atatürk’s favourite places to dine when he visited the city. The menu here is no longer exceptionally Russian, but the place still has loads of charm. The decoration remained unchanged since the 1930s. The doorman will hang your coat on a personalised hook, which has been engraved with the names of long-dead customers.

A narrow str. with stands full of textile products. Most of them are export returns and some are defected. If you're lucky, you may find famous brands for few euros.

Kızılkayalar Hamburger

Kızılkayalar is one of the small fast food restaurants at the entrance of the Istiklal str. (Taksim square) famous for it's hamburger. This hamburger is completely different from the ones sold by famous worlwide chain restaurants. What makes it different is the special sauce and garlic taste. Most people (including me) prefer this taste at the end of night life. 2 hamburgers and ayran is the fix menu! Here's their website (really?)

Best Sauced shish and hot turnip juice with moderate prices. Simply decorated building with 5 floors so no need for reservation. Menu is limited with shish (chicken, liver or lamb) and few cold starters but who need more?

On Istiklal str., make left across benetton, then (first) right. You'll see it on your right, across the Galatasaray Sport Club building. Confusing? Simply ask for Galatasaray Sport Club (not school) building or Hasnun Galip str.

Algeria Str. (French Str.)

Renovated narrow str. in French style. The original name is "Algeria str." but widely known as "French str." (what a paradox:) for theme. This street is full of cafés, bars, restaurants and art centers. The street is at the back of Galatasaray School, so pass school and turn left (open for vehicles). Walk down few meters and will notice it on your left, parallel to this str. I advice a visit in summer but they have heaters on the street allow the open areas to be used even on cold days.

Leb-i Derya Rest&Bar

Leb-i Derya is a nice restaurant at the roof of a building with a unique view of Anatolian side, historical part, famous mosques and maidens tower. The food is an assortment of dishes from different cuisines and really good. On the other hand, it's expensive (pay for scene, not for served), the tables are very closed to each other, crowded and as a result service is not good. Reservation is a must especially for weekends. I advice you to give a visit for a few drinks at sunset.

On the Istiklal str. you'll notice "Richmond Hotel" on your left, pass the hotel and turn left (Kumbaracıbaşı yokuşu). Walk down few meters and you'll notice it on your right. Also, there's a new branch inside the "Richmond Hotel" with modern decoration, rest is same.

Zarifi Restaurant

Zarifi is an elite restaurant and club serving in a historical building dated back 1900, build by "Zarifi Family".

Their ethnic cuisine is unique in Istanbul. On Thursday's you can listen genuine Turkish traditional classic music from the famous group "Altın Kızlar" (Golden girls).

After midnight it's an elite club with dj performance. You definetely need to make reservations days in advance for dinner and it's almost impossible to get in around midnight for even only a few drinks. Prices are over average but that worths for this club/restaurant.

On Istiklal str., make left across benetton (büyükparmakkapı str.), at the end of this str., turn left then right.

Hacı Bekir Confectioner

Maybe the only address in the world for original lokum (Turkish delight) and akide (hard candy). This is the main branch of Hacı Bekir and the original shop dated back to 1777 is in Bahcekapi, still operates today. Hacı Bekir is one of the "World's 100 oldest trademarks". The founder, Ali Muhiddin Hacı Bekir Effendi painting, by the Italian artist Preziosi now hangs in the Louvre.

Nowadays, lokum is well known by the world more due to Disney's movie "Narnia". Enjoy some while walking down the street just like me or you may prefer boxes as a gift for your relatives and friends. I advice you something more; serve lokum with Turkish coffee as some coffee shops do in Turkey.

Hacı Bekir is not far from Taksim square and on the main street you'll notice it on your left.

Boncuk Restaurant (Meyhane)

Boncuk is one of many restaurants in famous Nevizade street. It' famous for it's special armenian meze "topik", "stuffed mackerel" and grilled "leaf" liver. We're all friends with the staff as I visit frequently. In the summer season, terrace is also open but not scenery, and they've 4 tables at the entrance next to the street. In winter they serve in 3 floors and crowded especially weekends. Prices are reasonable here and they offer fix menu for groups. There's a traveling music group around tables, and they ask you what to sing. They're not paid by the restaurants so general rule is to give a tip. Enjoy a video by a gurme about Boncuk here.

Nevizade street is parallel to Istiklal, make right next to Çiçek Pasajı across Galatasaray school, and then another right or simply follw crowd.

Melekler Kahvesi (Angels Cafe)

I'm sure you've enjoyed turkish coffee in Turkey somewhere but besides taste, turkish coffee is commonly used for fortune telling. It's called "fal" and it involves reading one's future based on coffee grinds left in one's cup after drinking. Melekler Kahvesi (Angels Cafe) is the first cafe serving fortune telling service than many cafes on the same street followed. This street (Ayhan Isık str.) is commonly called "fal street" than.

It's a free service and created famous coffe cup readers with fans. When you finish your coffee, cover your cup with the saucer then turn it upside down and wait few minutes to cool. Than the coffee cup reader will take your cup and tell you future looking at the shapes inside your cup. An example is here (right picture) telling visitors of this blog that "you'll visit a big city with mosques all around and sea passing through it!

Melekler kahvesi is serving food and variety of drinks also. Besides internet access available and you may play games like taboo or backgammon.

On the Istiklal street, you'll notice "Garanti Bank" on your left, turn to this street and walk few meters. You'll notice cafes on this street and Melekler Kahvesi, on your right. A commercial on this cafe is here.

Viktor Levi & Pano Wine Houses

Viktor Levi and Pano are two wine houses next to each other and run by the same group. They serve wines of their own but if you're an expert, there're many more alternatives on their menu. A classic order is a bottle of wine with cheese plate but they also serve good food if you like.

They're located next to British consulate, but simply at Galatasaray school you'll notice vehicles passing across the Istiklal str., follow them and you'll notice both on your right. Link is here in Turkish but click "resimler" tab for photos.

K.V.

K.V. is the general name for the cafe, bar, restaurant and meyhane in the narrow passage at tunnel square. They're not all in one place but next to each other so you can choose one you like.

I like the old style decoration of cafe and mostly quietness being away from crowd of Istiklal. You may enjoy a cup of coffee, desserts, light food or lunch all day long and bar, restaurant or meyhane at night. Live jazz music is also available on some days. A good choice for hot summer days as outsie is always chilly. Tunnel is the last point of Istiklal str., so you may rest here and enjoy a drink. K.V. is at the opposite of Tunnel entrance, you may notice easily. On Map:

Hacı Abdullah Restaurant

Hacı Abdullah is serving traditional Ottoman cuisine since 1888 and claiming to be the oldest licenced restaurant of Istanbul. All food are delicious but especially famous for its compote. You'll notice glass jars filled with fruit compotes at the entrance.

Alcoholic drinks are not served here so I advice you to enjoy a lunch. Prices are over average (not much) when compared with similar restaurants but you won't regret!

You'll notice Ağa Mosque on your right, turn to this street and you'll notice on your left.

Ara Cafe

Ara Cafe is a famous one at Galatasaray square. Name comes from world famous photographer Ara Güler, who is living in the same building. Some of his photos are hanged on the walls of this cafe. You can meet him here if you're lucky (So here's his photo→).

Ara has a rich food menu similar to a restaurant but you can also enjoy only a drink here. Everything is delicious, prices are quite reasonable so just walk in. Since it is always very busy, you will probably have to wait for a table, but it’s definitely worth the wait.

It's located next to Yapı Kredi bookstore, you'll notice TebBank atm at the corner.

Asmalımescit Area

Although I've named places up to now, it's better to put this area in one post. In last few years, this area became the heart of night life in Taksim and still spreading through surrounding streets. To locate area, go to map on top of page and find babylon pin. Square made by Sofyalı str., Asmalımescit str., Minare str. and Jurnal str. is the area we're talking about. All area is full of meyhanes, pubs or bars for every budget. Keep in mind that these streets are narrow and sometimes its not even possible to walk especially on weekends around midnight. Some of my favourites are mentioned on this blog before but to give you an idea, I'll name some others here.

Beer houses: Starting from Tunnel square side of Sofyalı str., few beer houses are lined up along street serving cheap beer where their tables make walking difficult. Well known one is badehane on the corner but beer brand, amount and prices are same for all.
Meyhane's: Most famous ones are Refik & Yakup 2 (There's no Yakup 1:) which are mentioned before but there're still good ones like Sofyalı or Rakıcı. Rakıcı is somehow differs than others as it's an art gallery at the same time where you can buy paintings on the walls if you like. I dont know how they manage but worst mezes can be found at Asmalımescit Balıkçısı next to Rakıcı. Ones that are not mentioned here are moderate ones and can be a choice if you cant find free table elsewhere.
Live music: Babylon is unique and you can check schedule at the gate. Cuba is another choice if you like latin music&dance. But maybe your best choice will be the new Nublu Istanbul, branch of famous Nublu club in NY.
Clubs: They're quiet till 11pm and packed after. Music differs from pop to electronic and bar hopping is common. To name few; Faces, Otto, Novo, Lokal are always popular. Hard to give an up-to-date list, a new club opens frequently. Simply enjoy one seems goods and if you disappoint hop to next one. Have to say that door policies are strict, men alone are not permitted and shorts & slippers are not welcomed.
Drunk Food: Lucky you! Maybe you're in the best area all over the world for this. Choices can very from street food to soup, fast food to traditionals. Tradition is tripe soup (google if you didnt hear before) which is believed to be a treatment for upset stomach. Nearest place to enjoy soup is located on oteller str. (end of asmalımescit str.) called Karadeniz Pidecisi where you can also enjoy Pide (Turkish Pizza) or traditional Turkish food. If you dont mind walking, next to Galatasaray school, a restaurant (named Çorbacı) serving only varieties of soup is available. On Istiklal str., you can find french fries, sandwiches, hamburger etc. also. You'll not ask for breakfast in the morning for sure!

UPDATE: Outdoor Seating is banned and area is not that much lively since than.

Litera Terrace

Offers one of the best scenery of area but first you've to pass the keeper of paradise! That means you need a reservation but just try your chance and smile at the entrance. German knowledge is a plus as Litera is located at the roof of the German Culture Center.

They've an international menu including some German classics and service is excellent. Tables are also narrow here in order to place as much as they can, opening arms over 30 degrees is not allowed for not disturbing others:) I can say, stands are better than tables. It's located across the wall of Galatasaray school, on the way to Algerian (French) str.

Sabırtaşı İçli Köfte (Stuffed Meat balls)

What makes this restaurant "special" is the life story of Ali Bey, the owner. Read his story here before visiting this uniqe restaurant.

İçli Köfte is a special recipe from southeast of Turkey which requires experience and a well-developed hand manupulation. The basic mixture was prepared with only ground meat, fine bulgur, onions and spices. Here's a video on preparation.

He runs this restaurant together with family members but still he can be seen sitting in a chair in front of his white box stand selling içli köftes on Istiklal str. with his white and clean uniform. Restaurant is located not far from Galatasaray Square, across Yapı Kredi Bank Kazım Taşkent Art Gallery on your right. It's on the last floor (5th) of the building with a narrow entrance and a chair is available on the 3rd floor for resting :)
P.S.: Ali Bey passed in 2009 but white box is still available at its place. Rest in peace.

Zübeyir is a well known grill house famous for kebaps also serving delicious mezes. Zübeyir is the owners name, after working many years as chef at other restaurants, he opened his place. Prices are moderate and reservation is a must for friday and saturday nights. When you see big adidas building, turn right and walk till the end of street.

Name says all. English and Irish people are frequent visitors, an ideal place for watching soccer and enjoying beer. Food menu available but not ideal place to eat if you're in Beyoğlu with countless alternatives. There's also a stage inside and live music available some nights. Shortly, heaven for homesicks. It's located at the entrance of Nevizade str. Turn right when you notice Halkbank branch on your right, not far from Galatasaray square.

Hayal Kahvesi Beyoğlu

A classic of Beyoğlu where you can listen quality rock music for over 10 years. Live performance available every night and some nights two bands perform following each other. Well known Turkish rock bands still perform here like "Bulutsuzluk Özlemi" and you can reach programme from here. It's a small place with a mezzanine and really crowded especially on weekends. Bad news, entrance is not free but first drink is included in the price. I'm sure you'll not regret for paying entrance fee because music is really good especially if you like rock.

11 Leblon

Leblon is serving for several years but became popular after famous Turkish movie "Alone" where leading actor is a talented chef who runs his (this) restaurant. Not different than movie, owner(s) are after gastronomic creations and menu changes regularly. After 11pm, turns into a club, tables are replaced with stands and dj performance starts.
